The course will be characterized by its rigorousness, creativity, and sensitivity in making visible both social inequalities and the social groups affected by them, in particular those hard-to-reach groups who are not considered in statistical and macro-sociological analysis. In this capstone course, we focus on the cities and crises in order to synthesize and deepen what you have learned about globalization at Mason and in your life throughout and beyond the pandemic.The course concerns the structure and transformation of global cities linked to six specific countries over four continents. We will also examine local social movements fighting inequality and displacement on a global scale. ![]() The challenges we will explore are the global pandemic the global climate emergency world-wide gentrification, segregation, and displacement the contradictions of global historic preservation movements. How is globalization changing cities? How are cities changing globalization? How does globalization "take place" in cities?
